This item is a vintage 1946 ceramic outhouse aftershave talc container.

It is part of a collectible series inspired by Paul Webb's "Blue Ridge Mountain Boys", a highly popular hillbilly cartoon strip featured in Esquire magazine during the 1930s and 1940s.

Production & Branding History

  • The Manufacturer: Hipsh, Inc. based in Kansas City, Missouri originally distributed this specific item. Charles Hipsh founded the company as a necktie manufacturing and textiles factory in the early 1940s before branching out into novelty items and men's grooming products, capitalizing on the massive popularity of Webb's comic characters.

  • The Ceramics: While Hipsh distributed the aftershave and talc line, the ceramic novelties themselves were primarily produced by the Imperial Porcelain Company located in Zanesville, Ohio.

  • Design Details: The character leaning out of the window is Luke, one of the iconic mountain boys from the comic series. The container serves as a small vase or shaker designed to store 6 ounces of aftershave talcum powder.

Collectible Value

On current antique and collector markets like eBay and specialty estate auctions, these individual Paul Webb outhouse containers generally sell for between $15 and $30, depending on their paint condition and whether they still have their original corks or shaker tops
